Catalina Islands Snorkeling: The Complete Charter Guide

The Catalina Islands (Islas Catalinas) sit roughly 20 kilometers off the coast of Playa Flamingo in Guanacaste, and they represent one of the most spectacular snorkeling and diving destinations in Central America. For Costa Charter guests, a trip to the Catalinas is often the highlight of their entire vacation.

What You'll See

The Catalina Islands are famous for their resident population of giant Pacific manta rays — animals with wingspans reaching 4 to 5 meters that glide through the water column with an elegance that defies their size. From December through April, large aggregations of mobula rays (devil rays) are also present, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. The rocky substrate supports vibrant reef fish: king angelfish, Moorish idols, pufferfish, and schools of jacks. White-tip reef sharks rest in crevices below. During whale season, humpbacks are regularly spotted on the transit to and from the islands.

Best Conditions

Visibility at the Catalinas is generally best during the dry season (December through April), when reduced rainfall means less runoff and cleaner water — 15 to 25 meters of visibility is common. Water temperatures range from 24°C to 29°C year-round, so a rash guard or thin wetsuit is comfortable but not essential. Morning departures are strongly recommended: seas are calmest before noon, and marine life is most active in the first hours of daylight.

Half Day vs Full Day

A half-day charter to the Catalinas is absolutely viable and gives you approximately 2 hours of water time at the islands. It works well for families with younger children or guests combining the snorkel trip with an afternoon activity. A full-day charter, however, is the premium experience. You'll have time to explore multiple snorkel sites around the islands, stop at a secluded beach for lunch (our crew prepares fresh ceviche and grilled fish onboard), and return at a relaxed pace with time for paddleboarding or simply floating in open water.

What We Provide

Every Costa Charter vessel headed to the Catalinas is equipped with professional-grade snorkel gear (masks, fins, and snorkels in all sizes), flotation devices for less confident swimmers, and underwater camera housings available on request. Your captain will brief the group on current conditions, point out the best entry spots, and remain nearby on the vessel throughout your time in the water. Reef-safe sunscreen is required — we carry it onboard if you forget.

Booking Your Catalina Islands Charter

The Catalinas are accessible year-round, but peak conditions run December through April. We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance during high season (December through March) to secure your preferred vessel. Let us know your group size and any special interests (photography, ray encounters, whale watching) when you inquire, and we'll recommend the ideal vessel and itinerary.
